Over the course of four preparatory sessions, participants are introduced to the venue and the performance, explore selected movements, and become familiar with what to expect from the theatre visit. During the shared experience of attending a dance piece, special emphasis is placed on creating a welcoming atmosphere – whether it’s through a shared drink at the theatre bar, encounters with the ensemble, or early access to the auditorium. A follow-up session at the care home provides space for exchange, memory, and reflection on the theatre experience.

All theatre visits are organised to be fully accessible and are accompanied by care staff and volunteers. Focusing on dance helps reduce barriers to access: as an art form, dance engages physical, emotional, and sensory perception and depends less on cognitive understanding. This makes the programme accessible to a diverse group of people in need of care.

Due to its overwhelmingly positive response, “Out of the Care Home, Into the Theatre” is currently supported by the feasibility study “Care in Motion”, continuing through to the end of 2026. The study aims to develop practical recommendations for implementing cultural participation formats in care homes and performance venues. The resulting recommendations will be published in a publicly accessible guide.

Our vision is to establish and further develop “Out of the Care Home, Into the Theatre” as a transferable model of practice. To this end, we seek to foster sustainable collaborations between care facilities, performance venues, and dance companies that can operate independently in the long term. In doing so, we aim to contribute to making cultural participation for people in need of care an integral part of institutional practice – both in the cultural sector and in care settings.

Contact

Project Director Care in Motion & Artistic Director Dance On Participation
Laura Böttinger
T. +49 (0)30 40 20 33 21 1
l.boettinger@bureau-ritter.de
Contact for stakeholders from the arts and culture

Project Coordinator Care in Motion & Dance On Participation
Tomke Behrmann
T. +49 (0)30 40 20 33 21 12
t.behrmann@bureau-ritter.de
Contact for stakeholders from the arts and culture

Cultural Participation for Older People in Care Homes How can older adults in need of care participate in cultural life and be reached through dance? “Out of the Care Home, Into the Theatre” addresses this question by fostering cultural participation not only within care homes, but also in public spaces, specifically within the theatres.
